His
name is Barry Hansen, but the world knows him as Dr. Demento. Thousands
of Southern California Baby Boomers grew up listening to Dr. Demento
on the old, KMET (The Mighty Met). Back in the early 70s, it
was commonplace for Southern California teenagers to hide our trusty
transistor radios under our pillows on Sunday night. Our parents thought
we were getting a good nights sleep in preparation for school.
In reality, we were awake from 10pm until Midnight, listening to the
radio lunacy and creative genius of Dr. Demento.
Listening to Dr.
Demento on Sunday nights from 10pm-Midnight became a Southern
California radio tradition. This tradition continues Sunday nights
from 10pm-Midnight on THE BOOMER. As Dr. Demento says,
Its okay to let your kids listen. I wont warp
their impressionable little minds. After all, look what I did to
you.
The Dr. Demento
Show is the home of the unique, funny, weird, and downright
bizarre music. Dr. D. always invites musicians (?) to send him their
songs. In 1976, Dr. Demento introduced the world to a 16-year old
accordion playing Southern California teenager named Alfred Yankovic.
Shortly after being discovered by Dr. Demento, Alfred Yankovic
changed his professional name to Weird Al.
As
you might imagine, Dr. Dementos personal collection
of 45-rpm and even 78-rpm records is massive and may well be the
largest personal record collection in the world. Dr. D. shares
his Southland home with his precious record collection and his beautiful
wife, the charming Mrs. Demento.
Dr. Demento
has assembled a number of his favorite songs on CDs put out
by Rhino Records. His most recent Rhino release is a collection
of his favorite Doo-Wop music on a CD called Dr. Dementos
Doo-Wop for Kids.
BOOMER listeners
are often given the opportunity to meet and speak with Dr. Demento
as he regularly puts on his trademark tuxedo, bow tie and top hat
and attends various BOOMER events.
You dont
need to hide your radio under your pillow, but you are invited to
tune to THE BOOMER every Sunday night from 10pm-Midnight
as the legendary Dr. Demento invites you to, Wind Up
Your Radio."
